Why We Make New Year’s Resolutions

Will You Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2015?

Happy New Year! As we set forth to accomplish our goals and resolutions, it is important to think about why we make New Year’s Resolutions in the first place. Traditions are an important part of society, but how did this tradition really come to be?

Each year, the percentage of participants continues to drop due to the inability to carry through with goals past mid-January. Yet, a large majority of us continue to make resolutions, which are often designed to fail because they are unrealistic, impractical or unattainable.  If we start out with incremental steps we can achieve changes slowly and over time, but the key is to be realistic.

For example, as a goal for this year to perhaps reflect a new attitude, let’s take a common resolution and break it down into the steps that we referenced earlier.  Often we want to be in better health.  For many of us that might mean making a resolution to lose weight.  But if we turn this around to be a goal to achieve better wellness, it is not just what the scale says, it is the choices that we make with our nutrition, our exercise, our lifestyle decisions as well as working out.

New Year’s Resolutions are due to the mindset that the New Year signifies a fresh start. The first day of the first month of the New Year is the perfect time to make lifestyle changes. As we prepare to continue striving towards achieving the goals set forth on our list of New Year’s Resolutions, remember, self-improvement takes dedication and commitment, not a specific starting date.
