Wear Red Day for Heart Disease & Stroke

It’s National Wear Red Day! Grab your red clothing to help spread the message about preventing heart disease and stroke!

If you were to guess the leading cause of death in American women, what would come to mind? While most people immediately leap to cancer, there’s actually a larger health problem facing women in our country. Heart disease is the top killer of women in America, and stroke makes the top 5 list.

There is good news, though! Experts say that although heart disease and stroke are responsible for one in three female deaths in our country, they’re 80 percent preventable! All we need to do is make sure we, our sisters, our moms, and the other women in our lives are taking steps to keep our hearts healthy.

Here are just a few items that are under our control that can greatly enhance our health and possibly prevent heart disease from claiming one of us.  Smoking, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, hypertension, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, obesity, overweight, physical inactivity, high stress levels, and diabetes are known contributors to heart disease.

We have the opportunity to monitor and make better choices.  By paying attention to the above items, we can help our bodies help ourselves with better health and wellness.

One of the best ways we can spread awareness and encourage heart health is by wearing red today. It’s National Wear Red Day, so by donning red clothing we’re joining a nationwide movement to help put a stop to unnecessary female deaths!
