Veterans Day & United States Marine Corp Day

November calls for Americans to support our troops and honor them for all of their sacrifices. USMC Day falls on November 10th each year and Veterans Day falls on November 11th every year. While we should be showing our support and gratitude all year long, these two special days remind us to honor all of whom have fought for our country and our freedom.

Missions have changed over the years, but what has remained constant since November 10, 1775 for the United States Marines is the unyielding commitment to protecting the lives of our citizens and the interests of our nation. The purpose, by congressional mandate, is to be this nation’s rapid response force; they are thus called to be “most ready when the nation is least ready.” From humanitarian relief efforts to combat operations; from air, land and sea to every clime and place, the Marine Corps is ready to answer our nation’s call.

USMC Day recognizes the birth of the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps have been involved in every war the United States has been a part of. To support our Marines, it is encouraged that we thank them and show our appreciation whenever possible.  Log on to www.marines.com for more information and history.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.'” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Please remember to thank and to honor all who have served our country and protected our precious freedom.
