Today Marks the Anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

old TV set

On this day in 1968, the first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was aired in the United States.

Today is the anniversary of the first episode of the iconic children’s television program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”  Having enjoyed a successful and astounding 33-year run, the show touched countless lives and modeled to children and adults about the power of love, honesty, and understanding.  Hosted by Fred Rogers, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”covered many serious issues that other children’s shows did not address. While some of the topics, such as death, divorce, and war, were considered very heavy for such a young audience, Mr. Rogers always approached such issues thoughtfully, gently, without judgment, and with compassion.

To commemorate the anniversary of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” here are some of Fred Rogers’ most touching quotes.

“One of the greatest gifts you can give anybody is the gift of your honest self.”

“I don’t think anyone can grow unless he’s loved exactly as he is now, appreciated for what he is rather than what he will be.”

“There is no normal life that is free of pain.  It’s the very wrestling with our problems that can be the impetus for our growth.”

“All of us, at some time or other, need help.  Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world.”

“Discovering the truth about ourselves is a lifetime’s work, but it’s worth the effort.”

“Love and success, always in that order.  It’s that simple AND that difficult.”

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of.  There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

“Real strength has to do with helping others.”

“We all have different gifts, so we all have different ways of saying to the world who we are.”

“There are those who see the need and respond.  I consider those people my heroes.”
