How We Can Support Our Teens To Abandon Toxic Relationships

Suggestions as to how we can offer support to our teens.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a month dedicated to creating awareness for the growing epidemic of teen dating violence. As parents, the very idea of our teens beingin an abusive or toxic relationship is most likely abhorrent and heartbreaking.  This is why it’s essential that we gain some tools as to how to help.  For those of us who suspect that our teens may be involved in a bad relationship, here are some suggestions.

  • Listen and Offer Non-Judgmental Support

Often, it can be difficult to get our teens to talk about bad relationships.  The best way to get them to open up is by offering gentle support without judgment.  If our children do want to talk, then it’s important that we are good listeners.  While it will be challenging, it’s suggested that we do not interrupt to offer advice or make accusations. Instead, we should allow our teens to lead the conversation and only offer insight when prompted.  Of course, for those of us who fear that our teens are in immediate danger, we need to contact the necessary authorities or emergency services immediately

  • Offer Resources

While it can be difficult to accept, sometimes we are unable to offer the support or help that our children need.  If our teens aren’t comfortable talking with us, then it’s important to remember that we cannot take this personally.  Instead, it’s important to do our best to connect our teens with counselors or other professionals that can possibly help them navigate their situation.  While it’s most likely terribly difficult to step back, it’s important that our teens feel safe and empowered enough to make decisions on their own.

These are some of the suggestions that we can attempt to do to help our children get through a bad relationship.  Want to do more?  Join us at The Maria Sanchez Show as we get involved with Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D.
