The Rio 2016 Olympics Start Today!

The world turns its eyes to Brazil today as the 2016 Rio Olympics kick off.

It’s that time in the sports calendar – the 2016 Rio Olympics start today! The Olympics gather over 10,000 competitors from a staggering amount of 200 countries to compete in hundreds of events. Rio de Janeiro is the first South American country to host the Summer Games, and all of the activity starts today! The Summer Games run from August 5th to August 21st.

Although there were some concerns about security and health at the games (similar to Sochi during the last Winter Games), athletes and spectators alike are gathered in Brazil to be a part of one of the longest-running, most prestigious global events.  The threat of the Zika virus is what is keeping some of our top athletes from attending these games.  On my radio program last month, my co-host and I interviewed Dr. John Horton about Zika.  You can listen to the podcast here for more information.

Interestingly enough, after golf was added for the first time in 112 years, some of the top golfers in the world (including several Americans, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy) are recusing themselves from the opportunity, citing Zika concerns.   From archery to gymnastics to swimming to wrestling, there’s a little something for everyone at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
