Please, and Thank You! Let’s Be Courteous this September

Let’s honor National Children’s Good Manners Month and National Courtesy Month.

Now that it’s September let’s remind ourselves that children AND adults need to be polite and considerate. This is because both National Children’s Good Manners Month and National Courtesy Month are focusing on both in September.  As parents, one of the best things that we can teach our children is good manners.  Teaching them these practices early on will hopefully help to ensure that they maintain good manners throughout their lives.  One of the best ways to teach our kids how to be polite and courteous is by way of our example.  This is why it’s ideal that National Children’s Good Manners Month and National Courtesy Month overlap.  Here are some suggestions that we can do to be more polite this September.

  • Teach Respect

When it comes down to it, having good manners and being courteous is about respecting others.  As parents, it’s important that we teach our kids the value in respecting others, even if the other person isn’t acting in the same manner.  When we teach our children to respects others’ space, opinions, beliefs, cultures, and values, we are showing our young ones how to be tolerant and open-minded.  By being respectful even when we don’t particularly like someone or share their opinions, we can demonstrate to our children the value of being the bigger person.

  • Be Demonstrative

While it’s easy for us to talk about being polite and courteous, it’s also important that we show good manners in real life. Being polite doesn’t require a huge spectacle; instead, courtesy is best demonstrated in the little things that we do and say.  Simply saying “please” and “thank you,” opening doors for others, eating with our mouths closed, and knowing when to put away our cell phones are small ways that we can practice good manners.  When our children see that we are walking the walk, they will be far more likely to adopt these behaviors as well.  By creating an environment where courtesy is second-nature, we can hopefully instill these good habits in our families.

Heck, we might even inspire other adults to act more kindly towards one another.
