Let’s Stay Safe as We Travel on Vacation

Safety suggestions for our next getaways.

Now that summer is here, many of us may be getting ready to depart on vacation.  While traveling is undoubtedly fun and exciting, it’s important to remember that traveling in an unfamiliar place may also expose us to certain risks.  To ensure that we are taking care of ourselves, here are some vacation safety suggestions that we’d like to recommend.

Photocopy Documents

A practical travel suggestion is to make copies front and back of our driver license, our passports, our health insurance cards, our credit cards, and any other personal information that we carry with us.  If for some reason our purses or wallets get lost or stolen, at least we’ll have a record of what is missing and hopefully we can replace or stop their use.

Be Aware of Our Surroundings

When we are in a new place, it’s easy to get distracted. However, it’s important that we remain vigilant of our surroundings and any potential dangers that may be lurking nearby.  Distracted tourists are prime targets for pickpockets and other con artists.  So, it’s important to make sure to spend our time in safe, well lit, heavily populated areas and to keep an eye out for suspicious looking characters.

Be Wary When Using Local Transportation

When we are traveling in an unfamiliar place, we need to make sure that we are only utilizing official transportation services.  It’s important to never get into an unmarked cab as the driver could easily kidnap us or hold us hostage.  Even if a car is marked, we should not get in if we feel uneasy.  We should trust our instincts and go with what feels safest to us.  This is true with the ride companies that we can request via an app on our phone.  It’s important to make sure that the driver and their car description and the license plate match the description provided by the carrier.

Make Sure People Know Where We Are

If we are traveling with a companion, it’s probably a good idea to stay with them as much as possible.  If we do split up, then we need to make sure that we always know where our companions are and keep them updated on our location.  For those of us traveling alone, it’s advisable to make sure that someone at home or at the hotel knows where we have gone and when we plan on returning.  This way, someone can alert the authorities if we do not report back.
