Let’s Observe National Suicide Prevention Month

How we can observe National Suicide Prevention Month.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This month we’d like to promote compassion and awareness about the subject and discussing the mental health issues that can lead to suicidal thoughts.  Every year, more than 41,000 individuals take their own lives, leaving behind loved ones who are most likely confused and devastated by their loss.

Unfortunately, suicide is a growing concern that many of us may too often be ashamed or unaware how to go about talking through the subject.  Rather than allowing this worrying trend to continue, the National Suicide Prevention Month encourages us to come forward with our personal stories and offer resources to those who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. In addition to preventing more suicides, this month is also dedicated to helping those of us affected by suicide find the support and comfort we need to recover from our loss.

This September, let’s help spread awareness for National Suicide Prevention Month by sharing our personal experiences and offering support to our friends and followers.  Let’s be sure to tag our posts with the hashtags #SuicidePrevention and #StigmaFree to join the other people who are working to spread awareness.

If one of us or someone that we know is experiencing an emergency, it’s essential to call 911 immediately.  Additionally, if we or someone we know is going through a difficult time and having suicidal thoughts, a valuable resource is available at the National Suicide Hotline.  Their number is 1-800-273 TALK (8255). For those of us who feel uncomfortable reaching out with a call, we can also text “NAMI” to 741-741 to exchange free messages with a trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.

NAMI, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also offers a variety of resources for those of us struggling with suicidal thoughts and for those who are affected by suicide.  We’d like to invite you to log onto their website HERE to explore their resources and speak to a professional if necessary.

We at The Maria Sanchez Show hope you will join us as we come together and do our parts to address this difficult topic this National Suicide Month.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown.  Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
