Let’s Go Meatless on World Vegetarian Day

Perhaps We May Save the Planet by Skipping Meat.

Today is World Vegetarian Day.  Naturally, this occasion is about educating ourselves about the positives of going meatless and encouraging others to entertain the concept of a meat-free lifestyle.  While many of us cannot see cutting meat out of our diets completely, we can challenge ourselves to eat vegetarian at least one day a week.  Here are some of the environmental benefits of going vegetarian at least one day a week.

If everyone in the United States went vegetarian for one 24-hour period, it’s highly likely that we could see the following results:

  • We would save 100 billion gallons of water.
  • We would save 1.5 billion pounds of crops that would otherwise be fed to livestock.
  • We would save 70 million gallons of gas.
  • We would save 3 million acres of land.
  • We would save 33 tons of antibiotics.
  • We would save 3 million tons of soil erosion.
  • We would save $70 million in resulting economic damages.
  • We would prevent 4.5 million tons of animal excrement that is polluting the planet.
  • We would eliminate 7 tons of ammonia emissions.

It’s possible that we can get many of the health benefits of being vegetarian without going all the way. For example, a Mediterranean eating pattern — known to be associated with longer life and reduced risk of several chronic illnesses — features an emphasis on plant foods with a sparing use of meat. Even if we don’t want to become a complete vegetarian, we can steer our diet in that direction with a few simple substitutions, such as plant-based sources of protein.

These are some of the environmental benefits of going vegetarian for just one day.  We at The Maria Sanchez Show hope you will join us as we skip the meat this World Vegetarian Day.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown.  Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
