Let’s Improve Our Diets This American Heart Month

Let’s take better care of our hearts this month.

February is American Heart Month and, as the name indicates, this month asks us to take steps to improve our heart health.  For those of us that want to improve our cardiovascular health but not sure where to start, making small dietary changes is a great jumping off point.  Here are some of the heart-healthy foods that we could consider incorporating into our diets this American Heart Month.

  • Avocados

Contrary to what some of us might believe, not all fats are bad for us.  For instance, the monosaturated fats found in avocados are extremely heart-healthy and have been linked to lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk for heart disease.  Additionally, avocados are an excellent source of potassium which may help lower our blood pressure and risk of stroke.

  • Berries

Berries are a great source of polyphenols, antioxidants that fight against damaging free radicals.  Additionally, berries offer a healthy dose of fiber and Vitamin C which have both shown to lowering the risk of stroke.  Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are all great fruits to work into our diets this month.

  • Walnuts

While small, walnuts have major health benefits.  For instance, walnuts are rich in fiber and micronutrients such as magnesium, copper, and manganese.  According to research, eating walnuts can help lower bad LDL cholesterol levels, reduce diastolic blood pressure, and decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.  Other studies have suggested that ingesting walnuts may help us lower our risk for heart disease.

  • Legumes

Legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and the like are a great source of soluble fiber, which has been strongly linked to the ability to lower our bad LDL cholesterol.  As an added bonus, legumes are a much more heart-healthy source of protein than fatty red meats and processed meat products.
