How thinking positively may actually improve our health.

Today is Positive Thinking Day.  As the name suggests, this day is about challenging ourselves to have a more optimistic outlook on life.  When we have a more positive mindset, we may achieve certain physical and mental health benefits.  Here are some of the ways that positive thinking may improve our wellness.

It’s important to understand that while multiple studies show a correlation between positive thinking and improved mental and physical health, the research is not conclusive.  This means that there is no definitive explanation for why positive thinking leads to better health.  Experts theorize that having a positive outlook enables us to cope with stress more effectively, which reduces the harmful effects of stress on our bodies.  Others posit that optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles and are less likely to engage in harmful activities, such as smoking and drinking.

While studies have not been able to provide a definitive reason for why positive thinking may enhance our health, the benefits are exciting to consider.  Research suggests that having a more optimistic outlook may have the following health benefits:

  • Increased lifespan.
  • Lower rates of depression.
  • Lower levels of distress.
  • Greater resistance to the common cold.
  • Better psychological and physical wellbeing.
  • Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death caused by cardiovascular disease.
  • Better coping skills for times of hardship and stress.
  • Gratitude and mindfulness are other ways of positive thinking and they too have their health enhancement benefits.
