What We Can Learn During National Wellness Month.

August is National Wellness Month.  The goal of this month is to encourage us to make time for self-care.  While self-care sounds easy, many of us may struggle to find ways to improve our wellbeing.  For those of us who need a little guidance, here are some of the things that we can do to make the most of this National Wellness Month.

  • Explore a New Hobby

Hobbies are a great way to stimulate our brains while simultaneously relieving stress and allowing us to explore our talents.  Many of us have interests and particular strengths but we may not have budgeted the time to learn how to perform the desired task or project.  This month is the perfect time for us to explore these interests.  By broadening our horizons and discovering new passions, we can find more ways to relax and enjoy ourselves.

  • Enjoy Nature

In today’s digital world, it’s easy to get caught up with social media, video games, the Internet, and other forms of digital entertainment.  However, many of us do not recognize the toll that being connected 24/7 takes on our mental and physical health.  This month, let’s challenge ourselves to unplug and get back to nature.  Being out in the peace and serenity of the natural world is a great way to reset our minds and recharge our batteries.

If that sounds like an impossible challenge, let’s begin slowly.  Let’s set aside five minutes a day to turn off our phones, to close our computers, to stop engaging with the internet, to suspend our gaming for the first week.  After having a successful seven days under our belts, let’s increase it by five minute increments on a weekly basis until we arrive at a nice amount of time that we are disconnected.  Ideally, a minimum of thirty minutes a day is the recommended target.  According to https://jamesclear.com/new-habit, “On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact.

  • Meditate and Mindfulness

With the constant stress of everyday life, many of us may be struggling to really relax and quietour minds.  Meditation and mindfulness are great ways to focus our thoughts and shift our minds away from stressful and potentially harmful thoughts.  Studies have shown that people who practice regular meditation and mindfulness may sleep better, have lower blood pressure, experience less anxiety, and enjoy many other health benefits.
