Join Us in Learning More About Philanthropic Efforts of the American Red Cross

Here are some facts about the American Red Cross that may not be common knowledge.

The American Red Cross has been a driving force in philanthropic efforts to provide aid to those in need for generations. Since the organization was founded on May 21, 1881, they’ve provided assistance across the nation to numerous disasters. May we invite you to join us in learning more about the American Red Cross and its history?

Here are some interesting facts and a few asides that we’d like to share with you.

  • The American Red Cross focuses on disaster relief. Wherever Mother Nature wreaks her havoc, those that are left behind are almost always in need.  What to do?  Where to turn?  How to begin rebuilding?  Those are the goals of the American Red Cross.
  • The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton. Ms. Barton was a teacher, she worked in the U.S. Patent Office, and she was an independent nurse during the Civil War. While visiting Europe, she worked with a relief organization known as the International Red Cross and lobbied for an American branch when she returned home. The American Red Cross was founded, and Ms. Barton served as its first president.
  • Unfortunately, Barton found herself in an internal power struggle in 1904 and resigned from the American Red Cross amidst claims of financial mismanagement. While she was known to be a forceful leader, this was somewhat alien to a population that was unexposed to women in positions of power. She never took a salary for her work within the organization and sometimes used her funds to support relief efforts.
  • After leaving the Red Cross, Clara Barton remained active, giving speeches and lectures. She also wrote a book entitledThe Story of My Childhood, which was published in 1907. Barton died at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, on April 12, 1912.
  • The Red Cross provides a wide range of philanthropic services. From blood donation collection to disaster relief to international development, the organization assists in a variety of areas.
