Happy Birthday, Rene Descartes!

Honoring this famed philosopher on his birthday.

On this day in 1596, famous French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist Rene Descartes was born.  Perhaps best known for his famous quote, “I think; therefore I am,” Descartes is often considered the father of modern philosophy.  In addition to his philosophical contributions, Descartes was also an accomplished mathematician best known for bridging the gap between algebra and geometry by creating the Cartesian coordinate system that is still widely used today.

To commemorate this brilliant man in honor of his birthday, let’s all enjoy some of Descartes’ most interesting and thought-provoking quotes.

“An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out?”

“It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well.”

“I hope that posterity will judge me kindly, not only as to the things which I have explained, but also to those which I have intentionally omitted so as to leave to others the pleasure of discovery.”

“Perfect numbers like perfect men are very rare.”

“Except our own thoughts, there is nothing absolutely in our power.”

“If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.”

“The senses deceive from time to time, and it is prudent never to trust wholly those who have deceived us even once.”

“I think; therefore I am.”
