Celebrating Our Symbol: Flag Day

Flag Day June 14th

Spotlight On The Star-Spangled Banner

Today marks Flag Day. It may seem odd to celebrate our symbol of freedom rather than just celebrating the freedoms themselves. In America, though, our flag has such a significant history that it is worth celebrating!

Our flag has grown with our country, starting off with just 13 stars to represent the 13 colonies. Today, it boasts 50 stars for the 50 states while still carrying 13 red and white stripes to represent our roots. As a result, Old Glory is not just a banner but is a reminder of how much our country has grown on its foundation of freedom.

Flag Day falls on June 14th every year. On this day, government officials across the country are called upon to display our flag on all of our government buildings. US residents are encouraged to also display flags to celebrate the Continental Congress’s adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the United States’ official flag on June 14th, 1777.

Proper treatment of our flag is also imperative.  And when it is showing signs of wear and beginning to tear, it must be retired and ideally it should be burned.  Often there are organizations in our communities that will dispose of our gently worn out flags.
