It’s Earth Day Today! Go Green With These Tips

Earth Day 2016

This Earth Day, we can use these suggestions to reduce our environmental impact.

Happy Earth Day! This commemoration was first celebrated on April 22nd in 1970 when over 20 million people joined for pro-environment demonstrations. Within three years of this massive event, Congress had passed the Clean Air Act and founded the Environmental Protection Agency. There’s still work to be done, though! Here are a few things we can do to get involved in Earth Day 2016.

Do Meatless Mondays.

Meat production isn’t easy on the earth. Cutting out meat just one day a week isn’t that difficult, but if everyone did it the change would make a huge difference for our planet!  When land is used to raise animals instead of crops, precious water and soil are lost, trees are cut down to make land for grazing or factory-farm sheds, and untreated animal waste pollutes rivers and streams. In fact, it has such a devastating effect on all aspects of our environment that the Union of Concerned Scientists lists meat-eating as the second-biggest environmental hazard facing the Earth. (Number one is fossil-fuel vehicles.) And according to a report published by the Worldwatch Institute, a staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture.

Donate instead of throwing away.

One of the absolute best things all of us can do for the environment is make our stuff last longer. When belongings have run their course for you, find another meaningful home for them. Give your old bike to a friend or donate your old clothes instead of adding to the dump.

Make simple swaps.

Something as easy as choosing a different brand the next time you need to buy light bulbs or household cleaners can help you go green. Choose CFL or LED bulbs, and look for eco-friendly cleaners or, better yet, make your own! For example, equal parts vinegar and water is an excellent replacement glass cleaner.
