May Marks Arthritis Awareness Month

Debunk These Myths During National Arthritis Awareness Month

May is almost over, but we still have some time to take a moment and remember that this is National Arthritis Awareness Month. To what, exactly, is this month working to draw attention? Arthritis is a term used to encompass over one hundred medical conditions and diseases. These are also known as rheumatic diseases. To fully honor the intention of this month, here are a few myths about arthritis we would like to dispel.

  • Arthritis only affects older people. In fact, rheumatic diseases can affect people of any age. While they generally begin sometime between our 40s and 60s, even children can suffer from arthritis.
  • We just have to live with it. If anyone is experiencing prolonged joint, muscle, or bone pain, may we suggest that they seek out a rheumatologist? He or she can assist in assuaging the symptoms or suggesting proper treatments we may need to restore or reclaim our health.
  • Our weight does not matter. In fact, studies have revealed that losing even a small amount of weight can significantly reduce arthritis pain, especially in the hips and knees.
