Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Keeping the Memory Alive

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This annual day of remembrance takes place on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. This day is intended to not only honor and remember each and every victim of the Nazi era, but to also formulate educational programs in hopes of preventing future genocides.

Another period of remembrance will take place from April 12th to April 19th at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These events fall in the middle of Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place on April 15th. In hopes of keeping the memory alive, these ceremonies often include the words of surviving victims. In recent years, Stephen Fry and British artists have joined forces to keep the memory alive by gathering the words of genocide survivors.

On this day, it is important that we take a moment to appreciate all that we have and remember those who suffered so greatly. Unfortunately, the Holocaust is a part of our history, and we must make an effort to prevent future genocides.
