Food Safety Awareness On World Health Day

Protect Life Worldwide With This International Day

Tomorrow is World Health Day. While it a great day to promote healthy living in general, the World Health Organization has set forth the topic for 2015’s day- food safety. As the food supply becomes more and more globalized, issues of food safety become more pressing. Nearly 2 million people die each year because of unsafe food.

To prevent this issue in our homes, we should be reminded that raw food is to be kept separate from cooked food, and when we do prepare our raw food we should make sure it is thoroughly cooked. Also, keep our food at temperatures that are safe.

Harmful bacteria such as E. Coli and salmonella contaminate foods without any physical signs, smells or tastes so it is imperative for our health to make sure that we handle our food appropriately.   Temperatures warmer than 165 degrees Fahrenheit kills the bacteria in a few seconds.  But that 165 degree temperature needs to be the inside temperature to fully eradicate any contaminants.  However, everything except poultry that is cooked to that temperature will make the meat and vegetables inedible.

So the goal is to stop the bacteria from multiplying as well as slowing them down.  That can be accomplished if we keep our foods out of the Temperature Danger Zone, roughly 41 degrees to 140 degrees.  In other words, keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.

Tomorrow is also the perfect opportunity to raise awareness among retailers, farmers, government officials, and health practitioners about the importance of encouraging food safety globally.
