All You Need to Know About the Winter Solstice

Check out all you need to know about the winter solstice.

We know just how easy it is to get caught up in the holidays. However, along with Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza, comes another holiday. As the temperatures plummet and the days get shorter, it’s time for winter. Check out what you need to know about the winter solstice on December 21, 2016.

The Shortest Day of the Year.

The winter solstice marks the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere. It also is the shortest day of the year, where the sun is positioned directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. Alternatively, the day is the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.

The Earth’s Tilt.

We can thank the Earth’s tilt for the change of seasons. Tilted at 23.5 degrees, as the Earth rotates around the sun, the tilt determines how the hemispheres are tilted either toward or away from the sun, thus creating seasons.
