Tips For A Safe Picnic Month

With the wonderful summer weather we’ve been experiencing, it’s no wonder that July is picnic month. Picnics are a great way to get the family and friends together and to take advantage of the summer sun. But with summer comes heat and with heat comes bacteria. Please follow these tips to safely pack food for your family picnic.

  1. Keep your food cold! Use ice packs in your cooler to keep things cool. 40 degrees is the prime temperature for fish, meats, and poultry.
  2. Keep your cooler organized. Separate drinks and foods so that every time someone goes to grab a drink, the hot air won’t make contact with perishable food.
  3. Avoid cross contamination. Raw meat, poultry, and seafood should be kept cool and wrapped away from already prepared food or fruits and vegetables.
  4. Rinse off your produce. Rub fruits and vegetables under a source of running water using a clean vegetable brush or fruit cloth when needed.
  5. If you don’t have access to running water, try using a jug of water and soap or some moist towelettes to clean the dirt off of hands before eating.
