Today In 1850, California Became The 31st State

This Week in History: California Becomes 31st State - September 9, 1858

We celebrate California’s anniversary of statehood today!

Anyone who has ever visited Los Angeles knows that things move fast in California. This isn’t a new pace of life, either! California got its start in record time.

While most states that joined the union had to serve a lengthy time as a territory, on September 9th, 1850 California became the 31st state without every having been a territory. In fact, it had been part of the United States for less than two years before it was declared a state, setting records for statehood!

California joined the US in 1848 when a treaty with Mexico ceded the land over to the Americans. Just a year later, gold was discovered in the area, driving settlers out to the western coast of the country.

Today, we remember the progress that has been accomplished over the last century and a half, commemorating all this great state has achieved individually and with the country. As life continues to move quickly in California, we’re glad for a brief pause to look back on all the state has brought to the nation!
