Why Walking is So Good for Our Health

These are some of the reasons why walking is so beneficial for our health.

When many of us think about exercising, walking may not be the first option that comes to mind.  However, there are many physical and mental health benefits associated with walking regularly.  For those of us who don’t already walk as part of our usual exercise routines, here are some of the benefits that walking can produce.

  • Walking Burns Calories

Like all forms of physical activity, walking usually benefits us by burning calories and losing weight.  Health experts suggest a goal of 10,000 steps (approximately five to six miles) every day for the best health and wellness results. While some skeptics assume that walking is an ineffectual way to burn calories, it is often a great way to shed unwanted pounds.  In fact, a brisk walk can help us burn 200 – 300 calories per half hour.

  • Walking Has Mental Health Benefits

While walking is good for our physical health, it has been reported that it also does wonders for our mental and emotional health as well. Studies have shown that daily walks can reduce symptoms of depression and stress by up to 36%.  Additionally, because walking stimulates blood flow to the brain, going on regular walks may improve our focus, boost our creativity, and reduce our chances of developing Alzheimer’s later in life.

  • Everyone Can Walk

Walking is such a great form of exercise because virtually everyone can do it. Unlike fancy gym memberships or fitness class fees, walking simply requires us to lace up our sneakers and get out the door.  Obviously, this makes walking an ideal form of exercise for those of us on a budget. Walking is also a great form of physical activity because it is low-impact and easier on our bodies. Unlike running or other high-impact forms of exercise, walking is gentle on our joints and bones.  This makes walking an ideal option for people of all ages and fitness levels.
