Garlic Offers Health Benefits

This month’s veggie packs a powerful punch in a small package. Long known for fending off vampires, it turns out garlic can help fend off health issues, too.

Garlic is July’s veggie of the month and has a long history. Garlic was used in health remedies in India 5,000 years ago, in Chinese medicine 3,000 years ago, the Greek physician Hippocrates, often called the father of Western medicine used to prescribe garlic to treat a variety of medical conditions and by Louis Pasteur for its antibacterial properties in 1858. In World War I, surgeons turned to garlic juice to prevent wounds from turning septic.

Today, we recognize garlic for its powerful antioxidant properties, high nutrient content (it contains vitamins C and B6, manganese, allicindiallyl sulphides.and fiber), and its ability to boost the immune system and has been shown to reduce blood pressure. Working garlic into our diets may not be the best thing for our breath, but it can significantly benefit our overall health. By adding some garlic into our meals, we may start seeing these health benefits this July!
