Say “Thank You” on National Single Parent Day

Say “Thank You” on National Single Parent Day

Let’s show our gratitude this National Single Parent Day.

Today is National Single Parent Day, a day created to honor and recognize the hard work, devotion and sacrifices single parents make as they raise their children.  This day was created in 1984 by Janice Moglen who wrote an article expressing her hope that Single Parent Day might garner the same recognition that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day received.  After starting a petition, March 21st was chosen as National Single Parent Day to coincide with the establishment of Parents Without Partners.  On March 22, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5166 that declared National Single Parent Day a nationally recognized day.

In honor of this National Single Parent Day, let’s all try out some of these suggestions to express our appreciation.

Write a Personal Letter

Even if we are not the children of a single parent, almost all of us know a single parent.  Take this opportunity to write them a personal letter expressing our appreciation for their strength.  In out letters, we should acknowledge their sacrifices and offer our support.  This is a great was to show a single parent that they are not alone.

Increase Awareness

Another great way to celebrate National Single Parent Day is by spreading awareness for this day.  We can use #NationalSingleParentDay to post on social media, and we can also spread awareness through word of mouth.

Simply Say “Thanks”

For those of us who are children of a single parent, we should make an effort to reach out and say “thank you” to the parent that has given everything for us.  While we can send a card or deliver flowers, just telling our parents that we love and appreciate them is one of the most meaningful things we can do.
