Take Charge of Your Prostate Health: September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month!

There is no better time than September to help the men in our lives celebrate a world with more birthdays. During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a perfect time to encourage your sons, fathers and grandfathers to talk with their health care providers about prostate cancer, in order to make informed decisions about their prostate health. While prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men, it also has some of the highest survival rates when detected early.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, only 1 in 34 will die from it. When detected early, the 5-year survival rate is close to 100%.

Getting men information on prostate cancer facts and risks is key, according to the American Cancer Society. Education about your personal prostate cancer risk will allow you to make informed health decisions.

Different men have different symptoms for prostate cancer, and some have none at all. If you have any symptoms that worry you, be sure to see your health care provider immediately.
