Sweet Dreams! It’s Better Sleep Month

Let’s try out these suggestions to sleep better this May.

May is Better Sleep Month and, as the name suggests, this month is all about encouraging us to improve our sleep habits. Unfortunately, often getting a good night’s sleep is easier said than done. For those of us who struggle to fall and stay asleep, here are some tips that may help us to be successful in sleeping through the night.

  • Set a Regular Sleeping Schedule

One way that we may be able to get a better night’s sleep is by setting the same bedtime and wake up time every day.  Having a consistent schedule has been shown to help us regulate our bodies’ internal clocks and may assist us to get our bodies ready to sleep as our bedtimes draw near.  Not only will this create an opportunity to make it easier to fall asleep, but it will help us stay asleep as well.

  • Avoid Napping

It’s not uncommon for many of us to feel fatigued in the late afternoon.  However, it’s important to consider that we do not give in and take naps.  When we nap during the day, it often may throw off our sleep schedules and make it more difficult for ourselves to fall and stay asleep at night.

  • Rethink Our Bedrooms

It’s important to make sure that our rooms are set up in a way that aids sleep.  For instance, our rooms should be kept cool, between 60° and 67°. Additionally, our rooms should be cleared of anything that produces noise or otherwise disrupts our sleep.  Additionally, we should try to eliminate any sources of light in our rooms when it’s time to go to bed.  Lights, even dim ones, can trick our bodies into thinking that it’s day and will naturally make us more alert.

  • Turn Off Electronic Devices

It is suggested that we disengage from all electronics at least an hour before going to bed.  The stimulation that the interaction creates, as well as the light that illuminates from our technology doesn’t lend itself to resting and sleeping well.
