Spring Forward! It’s Daylight Savings Time

It’s time to adjust our clocks for daylight savings.

Today, it’s time to “spring forward” by setting our clocks an hour ahead for daylight savings.  The main reason for daylight savings time is to adjust our standard wake-up times so we get up earlier.  This time change allows us to maximize daylight, and many of us enjoy an extra hour of natural light during the day.  Advocates also argue that daylight savings time helps to decrease energy consumption as it reduces the energy that we use for lighting and heating.

However, daylight savings has long been controversial.  While most of the United States follows daylight savings time, there are some notable exclusions.  For instance, the states of Arizona and Hawaii do not observe daylight savings, preferring to remain on standard time even when the rest of the country springs forward.  It’s also important to note that the overseas territories of American Samoa (cannot legally follow because of the DST observation period mandated by the Uniform Time Act.  This period is actually wintertime in this Southern Hemisphere territory), Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands also do not observe daylight savings.

In 1966, the U.S. government set a federal standard for daylight saving times.  According to the Uniform Time Act, daylight saving time would begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday of October.  In 1975, the government amended the Uniform Time Act to expand daylight savings to the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. Finally, in 2005, the Energy Policy Act expanded daylight saving to the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.  Today, we are still on the schedule set in the Energy Policy Act.

We at The Maria Sanchez Show would like to remind you to adjust your clocks for daylight savings time. Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
