Shhhhhh! It’s Quiet Day

Shhhhhh! It’s Quiet Day

Lower your volume and stress levels this Quiet Day.

Today is Quiet Day, an unofficial reminder that encourages us to lower our noise levels to live a healthier and more relaxed life.  While we might not associate noise with stress, research has shown that there is a correlation between noise and mental and physical well being.  For instance, some studies have suggested a link between low-level chronic noise and increased aggression, decreased willingness to cooperate, and an increased risk for ulcers, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.  While it’s impossible for us to completely avoid noisy environments, there are some things that we can do today to get the peace and quiet that we need.  Here are some of the ways that we can learn to bring down the volume on Quiet Day.

  • Take or plan to take a Quiet Day retreat. Our retreats can take us away from our normal environments and allow us to relax and enjoy some quiet solitude.
  • Remember to breathe. As silly as that may sound, often we don’t take cleansing and healing breaths.  In through the nose, hold, exhale out through the mouth.  Ten of these together may restore health and wellness.
  • Gratitude is a conscious process where we can experience and take inventory of all that we have to be grateful for.
  • Consider meditation every day. We can create some time to shut out the noise of our day and simply reflect on our mental and emotional states.
  • Take a walk outside, away from the hustle and bustle of our lives either early in the morning or in the calm of the evening to bask in the quiet sounds of nature.
  • Try a quiet commute where we don’t use our radios or play music. One of my favorite things to do is to drive my car without any interference.  Silence can be healing and centering.
  • Make rules for times when we won’t look at or use our phones or other forms of technology at all.
  • Block out times when we turn off alerts on our devices completely, so we aren’t constantly distracted by them.
  • Invest in some noise-canceling headphones so we can increase the quality of our quiet time.
