Get Ready—It’s National Preparedness Month

Get Ready—It’s National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month.  How shall we do s0?

This month is National Preparedness Month (NPM), an annual initiative sponsored by FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency).  Every September, FEMA encourages Americans to develop an emergency action plan for their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.  We’d like to invite you to read further to learn more about NPM and to find out how we may better prepare for emergencies.

What is National Preparedness Month?

NPM is part of FEMA’s “Ready Campaign.” The Ready Campaign is an education outreach program that offers information to help prepare for and respond to emergencies.  NPM encourages all of us to prepare for emergencies such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.  This September, the theme for NPM is “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead.  You Can.”

What Should We Do This Month?

In honor of NPM, we’d like to suggest that we gather family and friends and make an emergency action plan.  A good beginning, is to find out what types of natural disasters are most likely to hit your area.  For example, for those of us living in California, we should prepare for an earthquake.

Once risks are determined, we should make an action plan.  It’s best to assume that in the case of an emergency, we will not be able to contact friends or family.  Establish a meeting spot where everyone should meet if there is a disaster.  Additionally, families should prepare a survival kit in case they become stranded.  Suggested items to include in a kit is water to last 3 days, non-perishable food items, and a change of clothes.

Another resource for NPM is  This site also includes a social media toolkit which includes some suggestions that you may want to share with your social media channels throughout the entire month.

Additionally, every week has a different theme.

September 1 – 9th :  Mark a Plan for Yourself, Your Family and Your Friends

September 10 – 16:  Plan to Help Your Neighbor and Your Community

September 17 – 23:  Practice and Build Out Your Plans

September 24 – 30:  Get Involved!  Be a Part of Something Larger
