Get Out Those Books and Celebrate Read Across America Day

Celebrate Read Across America Day

Learn how we can get involved and participate in Read Across America Day.

It’s time to dust off those books and get to reading. It’s Read Across America Day on March 2. Let’s work to encourage our friends and family members to read more in honor of the occasion. We would like to invite you to participate in this event and suggest these ways for us to get involved.

About Read Across America Day.

As part of an initiative by the National Education Association, Read Across America is a program that seeks to get kids more involved in reading. Over the past 20 years, Read Across America Day has encouraged kids of all ages to find their inner bibliophile.

How to Get Involved.

  • Create Story Time. Let’s schedule time in our day to read with our children. Got teens? Set a good example by making time in your day to sit down and read even if it’s just for a half hour.  What better example than to practice what we preach and show our families that the written work has so much to offer all of us.
  • Start a Book Club. Make reading a regular occurrence by starting a book club. That way we encourage reading, and our kids can engage with each other about the wonderful stories that they read.  I have several girlfriends that belong to monthly book clubs.  They say that not only does it stretch them to have a deadline when the book should be read, but it also provides a social outing, camaraderie and often, good food and libations too!

I have to confess that the reason I’ve never belonged to a book club is that my reading is nearly 100% non-fiction.  I know I’m in the minority and I just don’t want to read a book created by someone’s imagination.  I find that real life (autobiographies/biographies) is much more interesting than fiction.

I’m also in the minority of most readers these days because I read hardback books.  I have a library and I can tell you where I was in my life based on what titles I read during that period.  It’s almost like having photographs, except it is with books
