Everything We’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Ramadan

Please join us in learning a little bit about the Islamic holiday of Ramadan.

Spirituality and holiness are key components involved in religion. When it comes to Islam, Ramadan is one the holiest times of the year. May 26, 2017, marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. We’d like to invite you to join us in learning more about the Islamic holiday of Ramadan.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting observed by Muslims around the world. Ramadan exists as a holy month because it is believed that the prophet Muhammad received the teachings of the Koran during this month.

How is Ramadan Celebrated?

During Ramadan, fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset and includes abstaining from eating or drinking, smoking, or engaging in sexual intercourse. Before sunrise, Muslims will eat breakfast, then at sunset, the fast is broken with the “Iftar” meal. During Ramadan, observers are asked to focus on their faith through prayer and charity.

Additional Information.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month of fasting for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam; the others are a confession of faith, five daily prayers, Zakah (almsgiving) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).

Ramadan starts upon the sighting of the moon, which is largely determined by the Crescent Committee of Canada.

Why Muslims Fast.

Fasting in Ramadan is a main pillar of Islam that helps Muslim grow closer to the One God, Allah. According to the Qur’an “Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may learn self-restraint.” Fasting, which is recognized for its health, spiritual and psychological benefits, is considered by Muslims as a means to improve their moral character and provides an opportunity for spiritual renewal.
