Putting Ourselves First this National Self-Care Awareness Month

September is National Self-Care Awareness Month!

September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, a month that reminds us that we may want to strongly consider taking time and focus on our health and wellbeing. Often, with all the stress of everyday life, it’s easy to neglect ourselves. This is why today we can kick-start our self-care and make an effort to focus on our health and wellness. With this in mind, we’d like to offer some suggestions about how to go about reframing our approach to recognize National Self-Care Awareness Month.

Unplug and Unwind

With the social media craze at its height, it’s easy to get sucked into the allure that our devices afford us. However, many people forget that there are some consequences to living in such a connected world. Spending too much time on social media may affect our self-esteem, perhaps contribute to making us feel inadequate, and make us feel pressured to emulate glamorous influencers and gurus. This is why it’s so important to remind ourselves that social media is not the same as the real world.

To accomplish this, we might want to make an effort to completely disengage from social media for a couple of days. During this time, we could focus on our real-life friendships and relationships and do the things that make us feel good about ourselves. After taking some time away, it may be possible to resume our social media use with a much healthier mindset and a healthy dose of detachment.

Take a Personal Day

A great deal of our challenges are derived from work responsibilities and pressures. Though we might not be able to take a full vacation at the moment, we could consider taking a single day off to focus on ourselves. On our days off, we might want to sleep in, eat delicious food, catch up with loved ones, and focus on all the personal tasks that we have neglected for work. While taking a personal day will not completely eliminate work stress, it will certainly be a healthy start. Once we take a single step towards prioritizing our own wellbeing, we will have a much easier time making it an everyday consideration.
