Pucker Up! It’s International Kissing Day!

Pucker Up! It’s International Kissing Day!

Today is International Kissing Day!  Let’s celebrate with these fun facts.

International Kissing Day was established in 2006 as a means of celebrating the kisses shared between lovers and recognizing kissing’s place in society.  Today, Kissing Day isn’t just about romantic kisses; it celebrates all the different types of kisses and their special meanings.  Whether it be a kiss between parent and child, friends, or lovers, we should all pucker up and show some love on this day.  In honor of this International Kissing Day, let’s enjoy these fun facts about lip-locking!

1) The science of kissing is known as “philematology.”

2) The word “kiss” originates from the proto-Germanic word “kussijanan” or “kuss.”  Linguists speculate that this word was based on the sound that kissing produces.

3) Lips are one of the most sensitive parts of the human body; at least 100 times more sensitive than finger tips.

4) About two-thirds of people tilt their heads to the right when they kiss.  Some experts speculate that this preference is established in the womb.

5) On July 5-6, 2005, a couple in London locked lips for 31 hours, 30 minutes, and 30 seconds, making it the longest kiss ever recorded.

6) French kissing involves 34 facial muscles, while a simple pucker kiss only involves two.

7) The Romans created three categories of kisses: (1) Osculum—a kiss on the cheek; (2) Basium—a kiss on the lips; (3) Savolium—a deep kiss.

8) Scholars are unsure if kissing is a learned or instinctual behavior.  In some cultures in Africa and Asia, the act of kissing is not practiced at all.

9) The average person spends at least two weeks of their life kissing.

10) Our brains have special neurons that help us find each other’s lips in the dark.
