These Natural Insomnia Cures Will Have Us Sleeping Like Babies

For those of us who struggle to get the sleep we need, here are some all-natural insomnia remedies.

Insomnia or difficulty falling or staying asleep is a common problem that many face.  Unfortunately, failing to get an adequate amount of sleep can have negative impacts on many areas of our lives including our overall health.  For those of us who would like to get a better night’s sleep without having to rely on chemical aids or medications, here are some of the all-natural alternatives that we can try.

  • Exercise

Many studies have shown that people who exercise regularly have an easier time getting the sleep that they need.  By adding a moderate aerobic workout (such as walking or a bike ride) into our daily routines, we can improve our sleep quality at night.  Let’s be careful not to exercise too close to bedtime as the physical activity can actually make us too excited and prevent us from easily falling asleep.

  • Valerian Root

As a natural and gentle sedative, valerian root has been a common cure for insomnia for centuries.  In addition to helping us fall asleep, ingesting valerian root can also help us alleviate nervousness, tension, and anxiety.  Dried valerian root is often sold as a tea, but it is also available in capsule or liquid forms for ease of consumption.

  • Lavender

Many of us are aware of lavender’s soothing qualities.  This is why it’s not surprising that this herb is often used as a natural sleep aid.  By adding lavender oil to our baths, applying some lavender scented lotion to our skin, or spraying lavender scent onto our bedding, we can allow the soothing smell to calm us and help us slip into a sleepy state.  Additionally, ingesting lavender can also help combat our feelings of anxiety and nervousness as well.  Lavender can be added to foods and consumed as a tea.

My personal favorite is applying lavender oil into my nostrils before going to bed. The aroma alone is soothing, let alone the opportunity to sleep.
