Let’s See Those Teeth! It’s National Smile Power Day

National Smile Power Day

If you’ve ever had your mood boosted by the grin of a passing stranger, you’ll be glad to know it’s National Smile Power Day.

Smiles are magical. Just turning up the corners of your mouth can help you feel happier (try it!), and smiling at a friend – or even a stranger – encourages them to do the same. It’s National Smile Power Day, and we want to use it to remind us of a few great reasons to smile more often.

  1. It relieves stress. study found that smiling helped people who were recovering from a stressful situation and lowered their heart rates!
  2. It’s actually contagious. When someone sees you smiling, the part of their brain that controls facial movement is activated and replicates the behavior.
  3. It can help you feel more comfortable. Another study revealed that grinning and bearing through an awkward situation can make you feel more relaxed.
  4. It makes you more attractive. Smiling doesn’t just make you seem more approachable, it can actually make you more attractive to the person with whom you’re sharing your smile!

As if we didn’t need more compelling information about smiling, an intriguing UC Berkeley 30-year longitudinal study examined the smiles of students in an old yearbook, and measured their well-being and success throughout their lives. By measuring the smiles in the photographs the researchers were able to predict: how fulfilling and long lasting their marriages would be, how highly they would score on standardized tests of well-being and general happiness, and how inspiring they would be to others. The widest smilers consistently ranked highest in all of the above.
