National Senior Health & Fitness Day

Attention seniors – let’s get active tomorrow and every day thereafter!

Tomorrow marks a nationwide health and fitness event! The last Wednesday of each May is National Senior Health & Fitness Day, during which over 100,000 older adults will get involved at over a thousand events across the country.

Whether or not there’s a local event near you, tomorrow presents a great motivator to get moving! We live in an extremely sedentary culture, but prolonged sitting is taking its toll on our bodies. It may be possible to avoid health issues and feel great by getting physical today.

It might sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! If it’s been a while since you’ve been active, try going for a ten-minute walk. Just putting one foot in front of the other is fantastic for our bodies. As we get more comfortable with our activities, we can add more time to our walks or explore other ways to get active.

Personally, I’ve always been an athlete, from a very young age.  But now that team and organized sports is not a part of my life, I put on my sneakers every morning and I walk, hike, or stride quickly.  For me, it gets my endorphins going and the serotonin flowing.  Sometimes I perspire, sometimes not.  In other words, it doesn’t have to be arduous.  It just has to be consistent and provide an opportunity to move our bodies.

It also doesn’t hurt that my rescue puppy Miss Millie loves to join me every morning!  We make it a ritual for both of us.
