Shaken or Stirred? Join Us in Learning More About Martinis in Honor of National Martini Day

Enjoy a martini in honor of National Martini Day.

Whether you enjoy it shaken or stirred, a good martini always hits the spot. Join us in celebrating National Martini Day on June 19, 2017. From vodka to gin, let’s raise a martini in honor of the occasion. As we sip our cocktails, here are a few facts about martinis that may be of interest.

What is a martini?

A martini is a popular cocktail that’s traditionally made with gin and vermouth. In recent years, the cocktail has branched out to include vodka instead of gin, as well as a variety of flavor options from apple to butterscotch.

There’s even a hybrid version of a martini that James Bond favors the “Vesper,” made with gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet vermouth, garnished with a twist of lemon peel.  A dear friend of mine made that for me several years ago, and it was delicious.  You can’t taste the gin over the vodka, it’s a perfect blend of both distilled spirits, and the Lillet smooths it out even better.

Where did the martini originate?

There’s no clear answer when it comes to the martini’s history. However, there are a few origin stories. One tale reports that the drink originated during the Gold Rush in California in a town named Martinez while a different story says that it was made in a New York bar in 1911. Often, Martini & Rossi vermouth was used to make the drink, giving it its infamous name. No matter the story, enjoy your cocktail on National Martini Day.

Famous Martini Drinkers

The drink has been honored by actors and authors, specifically James Bond and Ernest Hemingway.  Bond was famous for his, “shaken, not stirred” version.  And Hemingway has a line in his book, A Farewell to Arms, “I’ve never tasted anything so cool and clean…They make me feel civilized.”
