We Can All Benefit From National Immunization Awareness Month This August

National Immunization Awareness Month

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and we can help spread the word!

Nobody likes getting shots, but you know what we’d probably like even less? Getting chickenpox, measles, mumps, polio, and more! Thanks to immunizations, that are a whole host of diseases we don’t have to worry about anymore. That’s why it’s well worth celebrating National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) this August!

This month was established to help spread the word about the importance of staying up to date on your shots. Whether you’re a senior, small child, or anywhere in between, vaccines can help you avoid diseases.

What can we do to be a part of NAIM? Kindly remind people about the importance of getting the right shots. Parents, college students, pregnant women, and adults with chronic conditions should take special care to stay properly vaccinated, and we can help them – and ourselves – remember to do so!

Just over five years ago, as a proud member of Rotary International, I was honored to travel to India and participate in National Immunization Days to help eradicate polio.  At the time, India was one of four countries in the world that still had cases of polio.  Now however, India has been declared polio free, leaving only Pakistan, Nigeria, and Afghanistan with cases of polio.

Recommended vaccinations for 19 – 26 years old are the annual flu vaccine, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, HPV, and meningitis.  The 60+ demographic includes these as well as immunizations for shingles and pneumonia.

Additionally, there are suggestions for pregnant women, health care workers, and international travelers.  Several national health care agencies offer advice, and of course, your primary care physician is the best possible source of information for your specific health care needs.

The Maria Sanchez Show wants to thank you for joining us in spreading the word about National Immunization Awareness Month! Also, we want to encourage you to tune into our program: Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. We air on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PDT/7:00 p.m. EDT.
