Today in History: The National Geographic Society was Founded

On January 27th, 1888, 33 men founded the National Geographic Society.

If you follow National Geographic on Instagram or pick up their magazine, you’re participating in over a century of history. That’s because today in 1888, the National Geographic Society was founded!

The Society got its start on January 27th, 1888. Its proclaimed goal was to increase and spread geographical knowledge. Nat Geo began with just 33 men, and they published the first issue of National Geographic magazine nine months after their beginning.

Today, the National Geographic Society is a leading nonprofit focusing on scientific and educational pursuits. Their magazine’s circulation is at about 9 million, and they aim to continue their work to promote awareness of and protection for our world’s natural resources.

We’re excited to celebrate the founding of such a great society today! While they focus on global issues, The Maria Sanchez Show has a new program focusing on national issues. I’m joining Senator Michael D. Brown on Shadow Politics (Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PST/7:00 p.m. EST) to talk about the current political scene in the United States. There are also broadcasts that cover other current events, issues, and trends that don’t pertain to politics, so please give us an opportunity to inform you on numerous levels.  Tune in to join the conversation!
