National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, stressing the importance of individuals taking control of their cyber vulnerabilities and eliminating them. As many benefits as the Internet provides us with, there are far too many negatives that leave us extremely vulnerable. Recent hackers’ success with the data breaches of Target and Home Depot stress the importance of being proactive.

This year, National Cyber Security Awareness Month has deemed the theme, Our Shared Responsibility. Our digital obsession is a shared responsibility that impacts everyone. Nearly every system now depends on the use of technology and the Internet to continue operating as expected. However, one cyber attack can alter a system’s ability to continue operating.

In promoting cyber security, National Cyber Security Awareness Month intends to emphasize the importance of stopping and thinking before you post anything online. Cyber security must be a joint effort, because obviously no one individual can be responsible for the cyber security of our entire population.

During this promotional awareness month, it is important that we encourage others to be aware of our cyber activity. Posting a simple status on our social media pages can be a good way to remind others to be proactive in their cyber activities.
