September is National Cholesterol Education Month

Having an excessive amount of cholesterol in our blood may create a buildup of plaque on the walls of our arteries and may lead to dangerous risks such as strokes, heart disease, and heart attacks. Our bodies actually need cholesterol! That is why September is cholesterol education month; a month where we can learn about healthy living and how to possibly prevent high cholesterol.

In honor of cholesterol education month here are some ways wemay prevent high cholesterol:

  • Keep track of what we put in our body and stay away from saturated fats that may affect our cholesterol levels.
  • Exercise for at least 3 hours a week.
  • Control our weight and try and keep it at a healthy level.
  • Avoid smoking, its harmful.

There is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol that we can ingest. The good type of cholesterol is called high-density lipoprotein or HDL and can be found in avocados, seafood, and nuts. The cholesterol that is harmful to our bodies is called low-density lipoprotein or LBL and it is found in red meat, dairy, and processed foods. Celebrate cholesterol education month and help spread the word.
