Mental Health Awareness Month Reminds Us to Mind Our Health

When we develop the sniffles or a cough, most of us have the good sense to slow down and take better care of ourselves. The same goes for a pain in our side, our stomach, or even a general feeling of weakness. But while it is important to be aware of our physical health, taking care of our mental health is just as important. For the past 65 years, Mental Health America has dedicated the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, and in 2014 their slogan is “Mind Your Health.”

Despite progress in mental health awareness, some stigma still exists even though many mental health issues are common including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In any given year, approximately 20% of adults will suffer from a mental health condition, however more than 40% will not receive treatment.

Physical and mental health go hand in hand. Conditions such as anxiety can lead to a lack of sleep that make people more susceptible to physical ailments. In addition things we do to improve our physical health, such as eating a healthy diet and exercising can do wonders for our mood in addition to the physical benefits.
