Pool safety tips to remember to keep our pets safe.

With temperatures rising, many of us maybe getting our pools ready for swimming.  However, open pools can be dangerous, especially for our pets.  In order to keep our four-legged friends safe, here are some of the pool safety suggestions we suggest.

  • Protective Fencing

For those of us who have pools in our backyards, it’s important that we invest in a protective barrier.  Pool safety experts recommend installing 4 to 5-foot security fences around the entire perimeter of our pools to prevent young children and pets from wandering into the water unsupervised.  Additionally, our fences should also feature self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent children and pets from entering the pool area without our vigilance.

  • Supervision

Pets should never be allowed in the pool area without appropriate supervision.  Even if our pets are experienced swimmers who have played in the pool before, it’s imperative to not allow them to jump in without someone to watch them.  Failing to supervise our pets could prevent us from coming to their aid if they begin to struggle or hurt themselves.

  • Water Chemistry

Finally, it’s important to make sure to balance our pools’ water chemistry before allowing anyone to swim.  It’s important to take measurements before hand and, if we need to add more chemicals, wait two hours before taking another reading to allow the water to settle.  If the water appears cloudy or discolored, then it’s advised to not let anyone enter the pool as this could be an indication of a potentially dangerous chemical imbalance.  Allowing anyone, including our pets, to swim in unbalanced pool water may lead to skin or fur issues, eye irritation, and other medical issues.
