Let’s Observe National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Let’s learn how we can prevent childhood obesity and encourage healthy lifestyles for our children.

This month is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month, a month dedicated to helping families prevent childhood obesity early on.  Addressing obesity early on can prevent health issues such as diabetes and heart disease later in life.  Let’s learn how we can help prevent childhood obesity this month.

-Encourage healthy eating.  Instead of cookies and juice for an after-school snack, try offering your child a piece of fruit and some water.  Keep healthy foods within reach and make an effort to limit your child’s consumption of bad-for-you foods and drinks.

-Support physical activity.  Encourage your child to get the exercise their young bodies need.  Limit the time spent on the computer or watching tv, and set up fun activities such a swimming or tag.  Consider signing your child up for a sports activity with some friends.

-Motivate schools to teach about healthy lifestyles.  See if you can get your local school to participate in programs that educate children about the benefits of healthy eating and exercise.
