Let’s Get Literary; It’s Read a New Book Month

How we can make the most of this Read a New Book Month.

December is Read a New Book Month.  As the name suggests, this month encourages us to expand our literary horizons by challenging us to read something new.  But with the holidays looming, how can we meet our December reading goals? Here are some suggestions to consider so that we can participate in this Read a New Book Month.

  • Listen to an Audio Book

One way that we can keep up with our reading goals while managing our busy lifestyles is by listening to audiobooks.  While this isn’t technically reading, by listening to audiobooks, we can still immerse ourselves in a new story while we are commuting, running errands, and taking care of other everyday tasks.

  • Read with Our Kids

Another great way to get into the spirit of Read a New Book Month is by spending time reading with our kids.  By setting aside time to read aloud to our children, we can enjoy a new story while helping them develop their reading comprehension and language skills.

  • Set Aside Daily Reading Time

Finally, we can meet our reading goals by setting aside time to read every day.  While this may sound impossible with everything that we need to get done before the holidays, taking thirty minutes a day won’t impact our ‘to do’ list very much.  In fact, letting ourselves relax and enjoy a good book will most likely help us feel more energized and be more productive in the long run.

  • Personal Favorites

I usually make my posts inclusive, thus you’ll often see “we” instead of “I” which I think sounds somewhat egotistical.  However, I can’t help but sharing that I am a voracious reader and I always have been.  I only read non-fiction, however.  I find people’s lives far more interesting than someone’s imagination.  For the first time in my life I was asked to join a book club several months ago.  I only knew one of the women.  Unfortunately, the majority of the selections were fiction, which is common.  I had the opportunity to be coerced to read fiction and found myself longing for the biographies or autobiographies that I find more fascinating.  Fast forward, I am no longer a member and I am happily reading my non-fiction when I can squeeze in moments as a break from my dissertation research and writing that is the final step in attaining my Ph.D.!
