Let’s Learn More This World Health Day

Let’s get educated this World Health Day.

World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on April 7th.  This day is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the theme for this year’s World Health Day is “Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere.”  In honor of this World Health Day, let’s learn more about the goal of universal health coverage.

What is Universal Health Coverage (UHC)?

UHC means that all individuals and communities receive the health services that they need without facing financial hardship.  UHC allows everyone to access the services that address the most pressing causes of disease and death.  Additionally, it ensures that the quality of their health services is good enough to improve the health of the people that seek the medical attention.  Keep in mind that UHC does not mean free coverage for all health care; it’s simply about making sure that essential health care services are accessible and affordable to all that need them.

Important UHC Facts

  • At least half of the global population still do not have full coverage of essential health services.
  • About 100 million people are still being pushed into “extreme poverty” (living on $ 1.90 or less a day) because they have to pay for health care.
  • Over 800 million people (almost 12 percent of the world’s population) spent at least 10% of their household budgets to pay for health care.
  • All UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.
