Let’s Learn How Gardening Benefits Us

It’s time to cultivate our green thumbs!  Here are some of the reasons why gardening is good for our health.

While fall and winter might not seem like seasons to garden, there are actually quite a bit of options in these months, especially for us fortunate enough to live in moderate climates.  Gardening is more than a fun hobby, in fact, it’s also an activity that can have substantial effects on our health.  Here are some of the ways we can benefit from gardening.

1) Burns Calories

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), gardening for one hour can burn up to 330 calories.  This is more than we burn weightlifting for the same amount of time.  If you are trying to lose a little weight, then gardening is a great activity that you should consider.

2) Lowers Stress

Studies have shown gardening can help reduce stress levels.  If you lead a stressful life or are just feeling anxious lately, then we suggest that you try your hand at cultivating a simple garden to make you feel calmer.

3) Improves Mental Health

Other studies have shown that regular gardening may improve feelings of depression or bipolar symptoms.  The therapeutic actions of gardening can encourage feelings of serenity and can make us feel more centered and stable.

4) Promotes a Healthy Diet

When we garden, we have the opportunity to grow our own food.  Not only will growing our own fruits and veggies give us direct access to healthy and fresh produce, but we can also ensure that we don’t use harmful chemical and pesticides on our food.

5) Encourages Deep Thought

Finally, studies have shown that being around nature can improve our concentration and promote deep thought.  By surrounding ourselves with plants as we garden, we can help focus our thoughts and perhaps work out any problems we’ve been struggling with.

These are just a few of the reasons why gardening can be good for our health.  We at The Maria Sanchez Show invite you to enjoy the benefits of gardening.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PST/7:00 p.m. EST.
