Let’s Learn More About a Civil Rights Hero on Rosa Parks Day

Join us as we celebrate the amazing life of civil rights leader Rosa Parks.

On December 1st, many states will celebrate Rosa Parks Day.  Held in honor of the historic day when Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, this historic event remembers the bravery of civil rights leaders and the obstacles they faced in their fight for equality.  In honor of this important day in our American history, we’d like to invite you to learn more about the life of civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was a seamstress and the secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  At the time, Alabama still maintained strict segregation laws, separating people by the color of their skin.  The city’s buses were no different.  On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was sitting in the front most row designated for black people.  When a white man entered the bus, the bus driver ordered that everyone in Rosa Parks’ row get up and move back to make room for the man.  While the other people in her row complied, Rosa Parks refused to budge, eventually being arrested for her lack of compliance.

Rosa Parks’ brave action and subsequent arrest spurred the Montgomery Bus Boycott—a 381-day boycott of public transit that launched nationwide efforts to end the segregation of public facilities.  In the face of this massive boycott, the city of Montgomery had no choice but to lift the segregation policy on public buses.  As a result of her efforts in bringing about the boycott, Rosa Parks received many awards and accolades.  Still, she humbly insisted, “At the time I was arrested, I had no idea it would turn into this.  It was just a day like any other day.  The only thing that made it significant was that the masses of the people joined in.”

We at the at The Maria Sanchez Show invite you to join us as we celebrate the life and legacy of the amazing Rosa Parks.  Don’t forget to check out our latest program, Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown. Tune in on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. PST/7:00 p.m. EST.
